1,200 Miles. Less Than 48 Hours. COC CROSSLOC Gets the Job Done.
Emergency Bearing Replacement at a Major Grain Handling Facility in Texas
When a bearing fails on a critical piece of equipment, every hour of downtime matters.
At a major grain handling facility in Texas, a bearing on the drive side of a bucket elevator with a capacity of 30,000 bushels per hour failed after approximately 10 years of service.
With no part numbers or identification tags on the existing bearings, the customer initially considered contacting the original manufacturer.
However, after reviewing photographs of the installed bearings, Stevie Stacks Industrial identified the existing units and confirmed that COC’s CX4SAFD36-608 CROSSLOC spherical roller bearing units could serve as replacements.
Designed for a 6-1/2-inch shaft, each CX4SAFD36-608 unit weighs approximately 310 lbs (141 kg), making transportation and handling a significant challenge.
Two Bearings. One Emergency.
The customer initially planned to replace only the failed bearing. However, an on-site inspection revealed that both bearings showed signs of wear, leading to the decision to replace both units.
With the bucket elevator out of operation, getting these massive replacement bearings to the facility quickly was critical.
1,200 Miles in Less Than 48 Hours
Late Tuesday evening, COC USA arranged an emergency shipment of the two replacement bearings.
At 10:00 PM on Tuesday, four team members manually loaded two massive CX4SAFD36-608 bearing units, each weighing 310 lbs (141 kg), into a Sprinter van for an emergency 1,200-mile delivery to Texas.
By Thursday evening, Stevie Stacks Industrial had installed both bearing units — less than 48 hours after shipment.
Easy Installation with CROSSLOC
Despite their size and weight, installation was straightforward thanks to COC’s patented CROSSLOC locking system.
The CX collar and factory-preassembled configuration simplified the installation process, eliminating much of the complexity associated with conventional adapter sleeve installations.
As Stevie Balderaz, CEO of Stevie Stacks Industrial, reported:
“Installation was a breeze with the CX collar & out of the box settings.”
Back in Operation in Less Than 3 Days
From the initial breakdown to restarting the bucket elevator, the entire process took less than three days.
The customer expressed appreciation for the quick response and successful installation and indicated plans to purchase additional COC bearing units through Stevie Stacks Industrial.
This case demonstrates how COC CROSSLOC combines rapid availability, easy installation, and innovative shaft locking technology to help minimize costly downtime — even with large, heavy-duty bearing units.
